2018 Retreat
We went to Arnold, CA for our annual shape lab retreat. We had a lot of fun hiking, swimming in the river, wine tasting, cooking, and discussing new research directions and how we might make it more accessible and meaningful for a broader audience!
CHI 2018
We had a great time attending CHI 2018, presenting our work, meeting other HCI researchers, exploring Montréal, eating delicious French/Canadian food! Parastoo, Alexa, and Yiwei presented papers from our lab:
-
Parastoo Abtahi, and Sean Follmer. 2018. Visuo-Haptic Illusions for Improving the Perceived Performance of Shape Displays. In Proceedings of the 2018 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI ‘18). ACM, New York, NY, USA. DOI: //doi.org/10.1145/3173574.3173724 (Best Paper Honorable Mention)
Inrak and Evan presented and demoed work they did as interns at Microsoft Research:
-
Inrak Choi, Eyal Ofek, Hrvoje Benko, Mike Sinclair, Christian Holz. 2018. CLAW: A Multifunctional Handheld Haptic Controller for Grasping, Touching, and Triggering in Virtual Reality. In Proceedings of the 2018 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI ‘18). ACM, New York, NY, USA. DOI: //doi.org/10.1145/3173574.3174228

Evan Strasnick, Christian Holz, Eyal Ofek, Mike Sinclair, Hrvoje Benko. 2018. Haptic Links: Bimanual Haptics for Virtual Reality Using Variable Stiffnes Actuation. In Proceedings of the 2018 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI ‘18). ACM, New York, NY, USA. DOI: //doi.org/10.1145/3173574.3174218

Haptics Symposium 2018
We had a great time attending and presenting some of our new work at the 2018 Haptics Symposium in San Francisco. Kai presented his paper on Electrostatic Adhesive Brakes for High Spatial Resolution Refreshable 2.5D Tactile Shape Displays. Alexa and Kai also gave some hands-on demonstrations on their shape displays, and we hosted over 100 visitors on technical tours of our lab.

Happy End of 2017!
This year was shape lab’s first ever THP (Traditional Holiday Party) party! We spent it bonding while painting ceramics. Happy Holidays everyone!
